Julija Zaharijević (b. 1991, Belgrade; based in Berlin and Vienna) is an artist whose practice explores the symbolic value of objects and how their visual form informs their meaning and canonization. Her motifs range from people and everyday objects to unfamiliar shapes — often with an art historic reference. They are usually selected based on a tension between the object’s conceptual significance and its physical appearance, posing questions about the notion of reality, hierarchical power dynamics, and the aftermath of the western modernist discourse. She primarily paints, grounded in her classical training, but her practice also extends to sculpture and printmaking.
